Make a day of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and explore 800 years of naval history! See world-famous ships and discover the port that is still home to the Royal Navy today. Try your hand at using navigational instruments and weapons, or see if you could hack it as the barber-surgeon or the carpenter!

Investigate the great warship, the HMS Victory, which is the oldest commissioned warship in the world. Step back in time and plan the Battle of Trafalgar in the Great Cabin and stand on the spot where Admiral Nelson died. Live as one of the 800 men onboard did, in the crowded decks where they worked and fought together. You can even see the Trafalgar Sail, which was at the foretop in the Battle of Trafalgar!

Test your newfound naval knowledge in the Action Stations, where you can enter into combat with Royal Marines, take charge of a warship or fly a helicopter! Expand your understanding of naval warfare in the Royal Naval Museum. You can see, hear, touch, and smell the Royal Navy through interactive exhibits. You can even participate in the Battle of Trafalgar in a walk-through simulation!

You can even see the raised wreck of the Mary Rose, one of England’s most tragic stories. As the ship preformed a routine manoeuvre, it unexpectedly sank. Henry VIII watched helplessly from shore as his favourite ship sank to the depths right before his eyes. You can meet the crew and explore what everyday life was like on a naval ship during Tudor times!

Head out to the open ocean to see the modern-day navy with Portsmouth Harbour Tours. You can take a 45-minute cruise around the marina to see Britain’s contemporary navy in action! View the massive ships as they would have appeared to a foe at sea, and glimpse into the past to see the absolute terror that the British navy would have inspired in its heyday.
