Have you fallen in love with Downton Abbey yet? If you’re one of its nine million followers, you must visit Highclere Castle, the home of the fictional Crawley family. Tour the 1,000 acre estate and the largest mansion in Hampshire. Enter the Jacobean home to embrace the strong sense of family history that pervades the castle. With a mix of modern and ancient photographs, it is easy to see Highclere’s evolution through the ages. Downton Abbey fans will be delighted with the added information about the Crowley’s around house. It will give any fan of the series a real thrill!

In nonfiction history, visitors will enjoy the Egyptian Exhibition, which features a recreation of King Tutankhamen’s tomb. A century ago, the castle was the seat of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who discovered King Tutankhamen. There is a reproduction of the famous discovery and its riches. There are also many genuine artefacts from Ancient Egypt, though they are mainly from other excavations, as most of the King Tut artefacts were donated to museums after the earl’s death.

Take time to explore the grounds, which were designed by Britain’s most illustrious landscape architect, Capability Brown. Investigate the extensive manicured gardens that will delight all the senses. You can admire the setting of Downton Abbey, as well as the unusually square-shaped castle. There are also many follies and eye-catchers scattered around the estate for the adventurous visitor to discover. See if you can find the Temple or Heaven’s Gate!
