Warkworth Castle rests majestically atop its mount beside the River Coquet, surrounded by lush Northumbrian countryside. Relatively intact, this 13th century castle gatehouse is adjoined to a hermitage of the same era.

Overrun by nature, the hermitage can only be reached by boat along the river and resembles the mystical coves from the legends of Merlin, with trees growing up within the ancient rooms and climbing plants clinging to every stone.

The grounds have passed through numerous hands over the years with countless Kings paying visits. Now, this Grade I Listed Building is under the care of English Heritage which provides visitors a chance to view this fascinating slice of history.

Not only are the surrounding grounds open to the public, but guests can also view the Duke’s Room and can be taken on an audio tour to explore the gatehouse. You can even climb one of the numerous towers that line the castle walls!

Filled with intriguing tales of history, its enchanting rooms and spectacular views will make for a splendid day out for the whole family.
