Set in the beautiful heart of Norfolk, the Blickling Estate is one of the most complete estates in the area and boasts over 400 years of vibrant history. There is something for everyone to see at Blickling with numerous gardens, romantic Jacobean buildings and endless parkland. Whatever the weather, a day there promises to be both entertaining and informative.

The Hall itself has passed through many historical hands; having been in the possession of Sir John Fastolf of Caister (whose coat of arms is displayed in the house) and the Boleyn family. On entering Blickling, you will be greeted by the spectacular Great Hall, which is bedecked with portraits of the Boleyns.

As you wander through the house you will come across the Brown Room, laid out just as it was in the 1930s. Art lovers amongst you will notice that this room is also home to family portraits, this time of the 17th Century Stuart court. And directly contrasting the Brown Room is the Chinese Bedroom with its oriental décor dating back to the 1760s.

If that isn’t opulent enough, the Dining Room demonstrates wealth through its sheer size. You can really picture its occupants sitting down to a feast within its Gothic interior. However, even the Dining Room’s great size is dwarfed by the Long Gallery, widely regarded as Blickling’s most remarkable room. Starting life as a room for indoor exercise and social activity in times of bad weather, it was converted into a library in 1745 and now holds more than 12,000 volumes. Literature lovers will be in heaven!

Once you’ve seen the wonders of the house, it is certainly worth stretching your legs in the gardens. They are largely formed of the parterre comprising yew hedge topiary, herbaceous beds and beds of roses. This is the perfect place to come to immerse yourself in fascinating history and to relax in spectacular surroundings. And for those visitors who are feeling less in touch with antiquity and more in the mood for adventure, the Park with its woodland is a lovely place to go for a walk or bike ride.
