Situated beneath Holyhead Mountain in an old quarry, Breakwater Country Park is s fantastic place to go if you want to explore stunning surroundings and get a good dose of sea air. You can walk along the impressive Holyhead Breakwater; measuring nearly 2 miles long, it is the longest breakwater in the UK.

If walking is what you’re into then the miles of walks in the Country Park will be right up your street. Why not take the path around Rocky Coast or be adventurous and head up Holyhead Mountain? Or you can follow the trail that leads to North Stack where you will find a bird watching observatory and stunning views across to the Island of North Stack.

For those who aren’t sure which walk to go on, the Information Centre houses plenty of information on the routes and the surrounding area. This is located at the Park Centre, which also comprises a shop, car park and toilets. So whatever you need, you’ll be able to find it there!

The kids will love it at Holyhead Breakwater, but there are some summer events that make a visit there extra special. The Holyhead Model Boat Club use the pond in the park on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons to sail their boats, which is quite a spectacle. And in times of tired feet, the Holyhead Breakwater Railway Company has trains travelling from Newry Beach (Holyhead) to breakwater Country Park. You can even hop on one that’ll take you to the end of the Breakwater. This is a wonderful way to get around and see the sights when you’ve exhausted yourself at the beach!

So why not grab a picnic, bucket and spade, the dog and whatever else you can think of and head over to Holyhead Breakwater Country Park?
