This 600-year-old house has been full of secrets and deceptions from its very inception. Though called a castle, in reality it is a fortified manor house. One of the oldest family homes in Britain, the castle is a stunning insight into English aristocracy.

Journey through secret doors to dramatic rooms where incredible architecture and intriguing stories will keep you captivated throughout your visit. Knowledgeable guides will bring history to life as they show you through the incredible 18th century music room and direct you up the medieval grand staircase. Visitors will have the chance to see an original Victorian kitchen to see how family servants lived in the 19th century.

Step further back in time and watch the house blacksmiths ply their trade behind the house. Admire the traditional techniques that they employ – guests are encouraged to ask questions!

You can also explore the grounds that are full of rugged Devon beauty. Powderham is set in the middle of a deer park, where you can take a safari to see the 600 fallow deer that live on the estate. Get closer to wildlife by taking one of the Nature Trails that run throughout the estate.

Powderham Castle is a great family day out for people with kids. Children can enjoy the Garden Play Area & Pets Corner where you can meet Powderham’s pets. Command a siege from Courtenay Fort, which includes suspension bridges, a climbing wall, monkey bars, and more! There’s even 14 ft turret to sight approaching knights and princesses! Powderham hosts regular themed weekends to help you make the most of your visit.
