Bodiam Castle is a history lover’s dream. A medieval castle straight out of a fairytale, Bodiam is a beautiful spot to spend a day exploring the castle and grounds. Built to defend England from the French in 1385, Bodiam is one of the most well-preserved medieval castles in all of England. It is unusual in the fact that the castle is nearly perfectly square. It is incredible to view from across the moat, where is sits unencumbered by anything but great expanses of water in its moat. You must cross over the moat, which looks more like a great lake, on a traditional drawbridge to enter the striking castle.

Once inside, go to one of the character talks and learn what it was like to live in Bodiam Castle in medieval times. The informative video will give visitors a real insight into the history of the castle. Imaginative guides really make history come to life by transporting you back to the 14th century. Meet a knight or a maiden to learn all about Bodiam Castle during medieval times. Climb one of the winding staircases to get to the top of the battlements to enjoy the stunning view over the grounds and the East Sussex countryside. Due to the unending grounds, you can almost believe that you’ve stepped back in time! Continue your journey through the ages and practice your archery while you’re at it! Kids will love firing the trebuchet catapult and the paintball cannons.

There is ample opportunity to enjoy picnicking and hiking. Settle down on the grassy expanses to enjoy your lunch while you feed the ducks or the koi in the castle’s moat.
