Twice the mummies! Twice the sarcophaguses! Since undergoing an extensive renovation in 2011, the Ashmolean has cemented itself as one of the premier museums in Britain. The new galleries of Egypt and Nubia span the Nile’s entire cultural history from prehistoric times to Egypt under Roman rule. Featuring more than 40,000 artefacts, the highlight of the new exhibit is the seeing the only complete freestanding pharaonic building in the UK!

The world’s first university museum combines a stunning interior with some of the greatest collections of archaeological finds in England. You can head straight for your favourite region of the world or follow the well-marked trail to explore every area of the world. With an eclectic collection featuring everything from Lawrence of Arabia’s robes to European Impressionists, the Ashmolean never disappoints. An ideal combination between university scholarliness and approachable exhibits, the Ashmolean has one of the best collections of pre-Raphaelite paintings, majolica potter, and English silver. With such a diverse collection, everyone will easily find their niche. The exhibits are constantly changing, making for an engaging and surprising trip every time you visit!

Children are actively encouraged to explore the museum during their visit. Make sure to pick up one of the treasure trails to take around the exhibits – you earn a personalized certificate at the end! Rest tired feet at the rooftop café, where lawn and deck chairs dot the outdoor veranda with spectacular views across the city of Oxford. Evening concerts happen frequently, so remember to check the Ashmolean’s website for dates!
