A new Sealife Centre is opening at Chessington World Of Adventures & Zoo in March 2008, with over 20 marine-life displays containing species ranging from shrimps and starfish to sharks and stingrays. The 250,000 litre aquarium, located within Chessington Zoo in time for the Easter school holidays, allows kids of all ages to go nose to nose with a wide range of sea creatures, while interactive ‘touchpools', exhibitions and a walkthrough ocean tank offer a wow factor to this perfect family day, out as fish swim overhead. Not something you get with a ticket to most zoos!

2008’s most recent arrivals are half-a-dozen snake pipe fish and gold banded pipe fish that have been moved in to the Centre's Seahorse Breeding & Conservation Centre. Sealife Great Yarmouth marine experts are hoping that they’ll emulate recent seahorse breeding successes and expand the population of related species, which include yellow sea ponies and native coastal seahorses. Originally from the Indo-Pacific region, gold banded pipe fish have bright gold rings on their dark bodies designed as camouflage for coral reefs, while snake pipe fish inhabit tropical shallow seaweed beds, and are therefore pale brown in colour, enabling them to hide in the weeds. Both species have exo-skeletons that make them unpalatable to most assailants, and seeing their weird defence mechanisms is worth the price of a ticket alone! Observing such conservation work in action adds to the lustre of a family day out to Sealife Great Yarmouth a makes for a grand, not to say eco-conscious, family day out.
