A recent addition to Edinburgh Dungeon is the Mary King’s Ghost display, which has won rave reviews from many visitors. The realistic exhibit focuses on 1646, during the British Civil Wars, and an era when periodic outbreaks of the plague that had ravaged Great Britain since the 14th century was a threat feared by one and all. The addition to the family attraction features a re-created plague scene in which the stench of the dead permeates the air, bodies are piled high awaiting removal for burial in mass graves, and thoughts of the terrifying haemorrhagic virus that wrought such havoc are to the fore – until, that is, a ghostly apparition appears, and what happens next has gone down in folk memory… ticket holders to the family attraction can find out for themselves what happens next!
