Regarded as one of the finest Jacobean houses in England, Audley End House is only a third of its original size, which pays testament to its current grandeur and prominence. Built as a place to entertain James I, it is hardly surprising that this mansion is so spectacular.

There is so much to see inside the house that you could spend an entire day there. Marvel at the Great Hall, dating back to the 1600s and rising to the grand height of two storeys. See if you can find the oak screen, covered in intricate Jacobean carvings, used to hide the servants from the gentry.

For the book worms among you, why not indulge in the library, lovingly recreated by the 3rd Lord Braybrooke and housing a superb collection of the family’s books. From there, saunter through to the Saloon with its ornate plasterwork. Don’t forget to look up at the ceiling and see if you can spot why it is also referred to as the Fish Room. For something even more individual have a look at the 18th Century Gothic design of the indoor Chapel with all of the original furniture still intact.

The Robert Adams Rooms are definitely worth visiting also, with their unique interior design posing a direct contrast to that of the rest of Audley End House. And the bedrooms promise to take your breath away with a stunning display of comfort and wealth.

For a breath of fresh air, why not take a stroll through the gardens? Boasting an intricate and extensive parterre, where the flower beds are arranged in astonishing patterns and symmetry, the grounds are well-worth experiencing. The Kitchen Garden encapsulated by walls is a beautiful piece of nature and is run entirely organically.

With a diverse and exciting interior and equally breath taking external aesthetics, Audley End House and Gardens will prove to be a wonderful day out.
